Koroni, the crown of Messinia
– history, culture and beauty combined
The picturesque small coastal town of Koroni is superbly situated at the south-western tip of the Peloponnese, 50km south of Kalamata. Steeped in history, the town is a charming jumble of narrow-stepped streets with tiled whitewashed houses stretching up from a fishing harbour, lined with cafés and tavernas, to an impressive Venetian castle – with several kilometres of beautiful sandy beach just over the headland.
Beyond Koroni, there is so much to explore in the wider region of Messinia: archeological sites, historic castles, excellent museums, traditional villages, fabulous beaches… and olive groves as far as the eye can see. Most villages have active cultural groups working together with the community to keep their authentic traditions alive. The whole area is beautifully undeveloped, reminiscent of the Greece of the 1970’s.
